Outlook 2011 version 14.6.1 will not open on iMac computer

Customer Question

Hi, Outlook for Mac 2011 version 14.6.1 will not open on iMac computer which has just been updated to El Capitan. I have tried to rebuild the Main Identity but it still won't open. Word, Excel and PowerPoint all work fine. I have had to revert back to a very early version of Microft Office 2011 to get Outlook to work but Spotlight won't index the datase. As you can see I need help.

Hi,

Thank you for writing back with that information.

Please try the following:

  1. Hold on the SHIFT key
  2. While SHIFT is held, open Outlook
  3. Did Outlook open this time?
  4. If yes, please close it
  5. Then try to open Outlook normally (without the SHIFT key held)

Please let me know your results so that I can assist you further.

Best regards,

Jess

No it doesn't open Jess. In fact it doesn't do anything - no bounce, nothing.

Ok. Please try to use the SHIFT trick with MS Word. Press and hold the SHIFT key, then open Word. Tell me if it opens or not.

As mentioned I have had to revert back to a very early version of the software however it is only Outlook that isn't working, everything else seems to be OK.

Ok I understand but the procedure was only to test if SHIFT+Open is working on your keyboard.

Anyhow, please do these steps instead:

  1. Open Finder
  2. Navigate to Application folder
  3. Open the Office 2011 folder
  4. Locate and right-click on Outlook and then click on Get Info menu
  5. Click to check the option that says "open in low resolution"
  6. Click OK and close all windows or dialog boxes
  7. Start outlook and see if it works fine this time.

Keep me posted.

Jess I will have to leave it for now as I will need to download the 14.6.1 update again to see if it works. I've had to go back to 14.1.4 to get Outlook to work at all. I did explain in my initial email when I asked for help. Thanks of trying though.

Ok. Please take your time. Please follow the steps I gave you and test when you are available.
