My gmail inbox is suddently filled with thousands of old emails. How do this happen and how can I fix it?

I use Safari. Mac Mail is on my computer but I don't have any use for it and prefer if it weren't there. I use it only in the sense that its my only option for sending mail from a web site and for "file/share/email this message" becaue there is no option that I know of. Its a complication I don't need, but live with.
