OK... thank you for the info. So we know that you have the correct account information. I will provide you the exact steps and information for setting it up on your iPhone. I would suggest what you tried, which is to remove the account and start from scratch. When you do, please follow these steps:

  1. From the Home screen, tap Settings.
  2. On the Settings screen, tap Mail, Contacts, Calendars.
  3. Select Add Account....
  4. Select Other.
  5. Select Add Mail Account.
  6. On the New Account screen, complete the following fields:
  • Name.
  • Address (your Optimum Online e-mail address).
  • Password (your Optimum Online e-mail password).
  • Description (a description of the e-mail address, this will be displayed in the e-mail account list on your iPad or iPhone, i.e.: personal or work e-mail).
  1. Select Save.
  2. Select POP.
  3. Enter your Incoming Mail Server information:
  • In the Host Name field, enter your e-mail server name .
  • In the User Name field, enter your full e-mail address.
  • In the Password field, enter your e-mail account password.
  1. Enter your Outgoing Mail Server information:
  • In the Host Name field, enter your e-mail server name.
  • In the User Name field, enter your full e-mail address.
  • In the Password field, enter your e-mail account password.
  • Confirm Use SSL is set to Off.
  • Confirm Authentication is set to Password.
  • Confirm that the Server Port is set to 587.
  1. To complete, select Save.

The settings for the server will be slightly different depending on how your email address ends:

 

If your email address uses @optonline.net
POP3 (Incoming)
Server: mail.optonline.net
Port: 110
SMTP (Outgoing)
Server: mail.optonline.net
Port: 587

If your email address uses @optimum.net
POP3 (Incoming)
Server: mail.optimum.net
Port: 110
SMTP (Outgoing)
Server: mail.optimum.net
Port: 587

I actually got it to work. Found a blog where someone else had the problem. They just added :587 to the end of the outgoimng SMTP and changed it to "mail.optonline.net:587"

Very good - that is in my instructions as well. What happens is that the default port (25) is blocked by most internet service providers, so they have to use the alternate ports of 587 and/or 465. In this case, 587.
