First, I'm sorry that I'm a complete and total tech spaz. My

Customer Question

Hi. First, I'm sorry that I'm a complete and total tech spaz. My problem is that I cannot click on the icons at the bottom of my screen. Won't let me. Can't access Word, Excel, change keyboard, access Start Menu (!), etc.
JA: What's the make/model of your device? How old is it?
Customer: Acer Aspire E 15, not old.
JA: How long has this been going on? What troubleshooting have you tried?
Customer: Occurring today. But been having general trouble lately, such as losing connection to Wifi (while another laptop nearby does not -- wifi is fine). Don't know what troubleshooting to do. Can't do anything but turn it on and off. Can't access Start Menu.
JA: Anything else you want the electronics expert to know before I connect you?
Customer: No

Hi, thank you for contacting JustAnswer.com. My name is Russell. I will do my best to provide the right answer to your question.

What security software and what firewall or firewalls do you have on the computer, please?

(What you are mentioning does sound like a severe-enough software disturbance or problem.)

Customer: replied 15 days ago.
I don't know. I didn't set it up. I have McAffee, if that helps.
Expert:  Russell H. replied 15 days ago.

OK if you don't know.

Go to

Control Panel

then go to

Security Center (search for it if you can't see it)

and go to the Firewall section and tell me what you see there (programs, and their status)

then go to the Anti-virus section, and tell me what you see there in terms of programs listed there and their status.

I don't know how to get to Control Panel.

I can't click on anything along the bottom of my computer. Start menu, files, apps.

Anybody there?
Expert:  Russell H. replied 15 days ago.

Try it with the mouse in the upper right corner.

When you see the magnifying-glass Search icon, click on that, type in Control Panel, and go from there.

Thanks for your reply. I Googled the problem, found an answer, and it worked. Good evening.
