This player is supposed to play dvd and bluray. If it isn't working then you can try cleaning the disc, unplugging the player power for a minutes, even playing a laser cleaning disc in the player, trying another DVD disc... And yes, doing a software update could help. You can get the update via network or go to the sony support site (I will get that info now for you).
