Hi I am Mike, the field technician assigned to help you. If you see a pop up for phone call service, it was not sent by me and I am not available by phone. To get started, I need to know you can see this message and are able to reply to me here.

-Explain what type of disc you mean by "non-bluray"?

It's a regular DVD I rented. Not a Blu-ray though.

This player is supposed to play dvd and bluray. If it isn't working then you can try cleaning the disc, unplugging the player power for a minutes, even playing a laser cleaning disc in the player, trying another DVD disc... And yes, doing a software update could help. You can get the update via network or go to the sony support site (I will get that info now for you).
