JA: What's the make/model of your device? How old is it?
Customer: the device was manufactured in Japan July 2003
JA: How long has this been going on? What troubleshooting have you tried?
Customer: I don't drive at night too often, so taht question I am unable to answer. I bought it used on e-bay. The one in the vehicle didn't work. I swapped face plates to see if that would be the answer. No such luck
JA: Anything else you want the electronics expert to know before I connect you?
Customer: I have one to take apart, to work with an expert. The one that is in the car, is still inplace. If the inside needs attention I'll proactice on the old one.

Is it the backlight that is not working, behind the buttons ?

The lights in the screen work but there is no way to see the buttons 1-6 nor tone, balance. ..

That would probably require that the backlight be replaced.

I unfortunately don't have further information on how to replace the backlight in this model, so with apologies I have Opted Out, opening the case to other Experts in this category.
