Hello & Welcome,

Sorry to hear of any issue you are having with your device.

To help you with this issue, may I ask:

1) The AGE of the device?

2) WHEN this issue first began?

3) Does the device behave this way when connected to a vehicle power adapter (in a vehicle)?

4) Does is also do this when powered ONLY by the internal battery (not connected to any power source)?

Hi again and thanks for that information.

Sorry for any delay.

OK - May I ask if the device software (firmware) has been updated recently - say within the last 6 months or so?

Customer: replied 7 months ago.
No it has not been updated recently or at all that I am aware of
Expert:  Greg A. replied 7 months ago.

OK - if that is the case, then that is the first thing I would recommend - updating the device software (firmware). And by the way, the software update is relatively fast - just a few minutes. So you do NOT want to update the maps - as that can take an hour or more.

To update the device software, you will need a USB cable - to connect the device to a computer - and a program called Garmin Express.

If you have not installed that program on your computer yet, you can get it at the following link (to Garmin's website). There is even a short video on that page - to get you started if you have not used the program in the past.

Click Here -->

Reminder: You want to update the DEVICE SOFTWARE ONLY - at this time - to see if that corrects this dim display issue.

Let me know if you have any trouble getting that program installed and running on your computer, as there are a couple of steps we can try - as a workaround fix.

I have a Mac and a PC at my office but am away on assignment until July 25. I have an iPad with me Can I download and upload it from my iPad???
Expert:  Greg A. replied 7 months ago.

Unfortunately no - you NEED some kind of "computer" to download and run the program.

So let me send you the workaround I spoke of earlier, so you can try that now and see if it gets you going again.

NOTE: it is very DETAILED and the steps MUST be done in sequence and making CHANGES where it says to, so please do not take any shortcuts.

OK - a few of these devices in this series have been found to have a slight glitch in the "settings" section of the software, and you may be able to make it behave again - using the following steps.

1) Start with at the MAIN screen - with no active route.
3) Touch TIME (or Units & Time)
4) Touch on AUTOMATIC - to ADD the select CHECK-MARK
-- touch OK on some devices
5) Touch the BACK ARROW
6) Touch DISPLAY
8) ADJUST the brightness level (even if just a little bit)
-- touch OK on some devices
9) Go back to the MAIN screen, and power OFF and ON the device.

The brightness SHOULD now stay at the level set.
Make sure you TEST this by connecting to vehicle power and letting the device operate for several minutes (at least).

Please let me know your results - when you can.

I see it has been a few days and I just wanted to follow up to see if you have any more questions concerning this issue or if the issue was resolved?

I look forward to any further questions or results that you may have.
