Press and hold the power button for 20 seconds. This will reset the firmware. If it doesn't respond, let me know.

Nothing happened and large battery icon still there.

Plug it into the charger for 30 minutes. After that and while still plugged into the charger, press and hold the power button for 30 seconds. DO NOT unplug the Kindle from power during this entire process.

FYI have had charger and new cord attached since 8 pm. Remember hearing 4-6 to re-charge battery. Sounds like I may need a Kindle funeral instead.

Have to call it a night. Any other suggestions?

Your battery has failed. You can replace it, but they're almost as expensive as a new Kindle. If your Kindle is less than a year old, you can get a replacement Kindle at no cost. Your other options are to use any tablet or phone to view your books on at no cost. You can also just trade in the Kindle and get a $20 discount on a new Kindle.
