Resolved Question:

I just purchased a Canon Vixia HF R40 Camrecorder. I have to have this camera work by this weekend. I practiced recording on to a Scandisk and it worked. I have a few questions.
(1) Can I record to the flash drive a movie with out it plugged into the computer, is so how do I do it.
(2) How do I send from my camera to my laptop computer to copy the movie onto a DVD?

Hi, thank you for contacting JustAnswer.com. My name is Russell. I will do my best to provide the right answer to your question.

The answer to the first question is slightly uncertain, but inclining to a 'No', unfortunately.
The page on the subject, cited below, states the authoritative word on the matter of recording to a flash drive from a Vixia HF F40: It sounds in summary as if an external hard drive can have one of two things written onto it from the camcorder:
A. the entire built-in memory of the camcorder, or
B. the entire contents of the memory card in the camcorder.
Also, this quote from the page states the discouraging word on using a flash drive instead of an external hard drive:
(General USB memory devices or card readers cannot be used.)
Cite: http://kbsupport.cusa.canon.com/system/selfservice.controller?CONFIGURATION=1011&PARTITION_ID=1&secureFlag=false&TIMEZONE_OFFSET=&CMD=VIEW_ARTICLE&ARTICLE_ID=57563
and note, you can try the procedure with a USB / flash drive if you like, but success is *not* guaranteed. And also note, you may have to completely initialize (and erase!) the entire flash drive using the camera's controls, as is detailed (for an external hard drive, mind) in the first part of the page's instructions. Then the procedure, titled,
Saving a Memory onto an External Hard Drive
can be tried.

But as for recording live, onto a flash drive, no - that cannot be done. You can record to built-in memory, or else to a memory card inserted into and working in the camcorder.

The answer to the second question is, quite simply, that you use a DVD-burning application program on your computer, such as the somewhat standard 'Nero Burning ROM' program, after having copied the movie file off the camcorder and onto the computer. The Nero program will manage making the movie file into the proper sort of entity on the DVD disc, etc., if you direct it correctly.
