Hello and thanks for your question
I look forward to assisting you today with the best answer possible.
Please send me a short message when you are ready to begin.
As stated, the receiver shuts down after 5 seconds. I read I could unplug it and then re-plug it at full volume if unit appeared to stay on, a solution for protected mode status. I just want to know if there are any other things to try or if it is just junk now. I have seen posts that this happens a lot to this model and av receivers in general.
Does receiver behaves the same even after disconnecting the speakers & other I/O devices, with only power connected ?
Stand alone it does the same.
Does the unit gets hot ?
no, it has always been a cool operating unit.
Do you smell any odor of burnt plastic or insulation ?
Take your nose near the unit and check.
not a thing else out the ordinary.
It could either be a blown power supply or a board and it needs to be replaced.Look for either a pulled white wire, or check any white wires coming off the transformer where they plug into the board. There could be a cold solder joint which needs to be resoldered or a faulty capacitor in the power supply, or near the protection relay.
We have to diagnose the receiver by visually inspecting the large filter capacitors for bulges, leaking at the base or the solder joints. Also, you can test the output power transistors by verifying that only one leg of them are common to ground. If more than one leg is to ground then it verifies that the transistor is shorted.
In most cases the output transistors attached to the heat sink are shorted. This way you will be able to know which one is at fault and then replace it accordingly.
Are you comfortable working with electronics circuitry ?
Is that the kind of thing that causes protected mode? It is unlikely I will open the unit to be able to ascertain these failures, soldering or bulges. This means junk to me. But thank you for the diagnosis, it was informational.
If you feel you cannot do it then the best bet would be to take it to a local repair shop to repair it at a less cost.
Would you like me to find a electronics repair near your area ?
Again thanks. Repair shops charge $100+ to look at anything; and I can buy another used at amazon for $150 . It was just the protected mode thing that I did not understand.

Are you satisfied with my service ?
Do I deserve a positive rating today ?
Again thanks. I get system board problems here in Tampa, lightning capital of the world all the time.. I have lost two motherboards in the last 10 years. I suspect it has happened again. We soldier on. I am satisfied with your service today. My rating is positive.
