Customer Question

New question. And I apologize but this is where the site leads me when I select "ask a question" so I hope I got this correct. I have a ADC equalizer model SS-325X I just got this eq and was told works perfectly. I disconnected my previous EQ ( ADC SS-412X ) to test this one out before relocating the previous one. Both have exact same inputs / outputs. When I powered on new unit ( SS-325X ) lights came on, but no signal displayed on meters or spectrum analyzer and no sound playing through it. I plugged old eq back in to confirm I had signal in and out from Sansui receiver. Old one worked fine. I tried using the tape one in/out on the new one. Meters began to display readings. I then unplugged cables and again hooked up new one using standard main in / out. Display showed audio readings properly and sound was working. All functions continued to work for many hours last night. Today when I powered it on, I again had no audio signal being displayed on spectrum analyzer and no audio heard through EQ. I returned connections to old eq and sound works fine. While in the malfunctioning state, the eq still shows eq settings when you adjust each frequency. But no sound goes through unit and spectrum analyzer displays no signal.  And now tonight the issue just got worse. If the eq is hooked up to tape monitor one on the sansui receiver, the audio is all distorted real bad. And this is with tape monitor one turned off on the receiver. If I turn tape one on, i get no sound. if turned off, sound is all distorted. Unplug audio cables from eq and distortion is gone. Please advise as to what may be wrong or what I can check.. Thanks, Darius

Hi and welcome to JustAnswer,

Initially, please re-confirm; ADC Sound Shaper SS-412X + Sansui still works good.

Customer replied 325 days and 2 hours ago.

Yes Sansui receiver and my original ADC 412 is hooked up through tape monitor one on sansui receiver and working fine. But if I swap to the new ADC 325 eq, I loose all readings on spectrum analyzer and get no sound through eq when set to tape monitor one on receiver. Additionally if I turn off tape monitor one on Sansui, sound comes back on but is severly distorted. If I unplug the tape monitor one output from receiver, the distortion stops.
So it seems the new ADC 325 has such a bad problem that it has the ability to distort the sound just by pluging the sansui tape one line out into it. Even when tape monitor one on receiver is turned off.
Out of concern of causing damage to Sansui, I have completely disconnected it. I have tried using a cheap cd player to test eq. I plugged it into main in on eq to see if display would read any input signal. It does not. I have excersized all buttons while testing in hopes a dirty contact was the cause. I got no result.
During the hours it did work the first night. All functions worked perfect. No signs of switches needing cleaned. All functions without static while pushing buttons. Unit looks good as new. Seller says always worked fine and pictures he sent showed display working. I picked up unit in person. Seller met me half way between his location and mine. He had it riding on floor of trunk of his car. Was likely a bumpy ride for unit. I placed it on folded blanket on seat of my truck. The bumpy ride on floor of his trunk is my best guess as to why it now has problems.
I contacted seller. Told him I love this unit and not asking for refund and not complaining. But asked if he would tell me if he ever had any problems with unit, if it had ever been in for repair etc... He held true to it always worked fine.
Again vibration from riding in his trunk is my only guess as to why it suddenly has this problem.
Please note, firsts attempt to hook up the first night resulted in no display of signal on analyzer and no sound through it. Then after trying to input signal into its tape one input display showed input readings. Then hooked to main in/out and worked perfect for hours. Second night it had no display opera dings of input and no sound through it. Then new issue if it somehow causing severe distortion to audio even with tape one turned off on receiver.
In short , plug any tape out signal from receiver into the main in on eq, and it will distort all inputs going through receiver. Even with no other cables hooked to eq. Almost like it is shorting out the tape out signal from receiver.
Hope this helps. Sorry such a long reply. Just trying to cover all bases.

Strongly agree that the fault on the ADC SS-325X is severe. And it would be an internal hardware issue requiring that the SS-325X be opened up for visual inspection, voltage measurements, confirm fault and effect repairs.

The only easy user doable tries:

  • ensure that the voltage selector (depending on the versions is set for 120VAC;
  • try again all the inputs LINE, TAPE-1 and TAPE-2 using the CD player;
  • connect the 325's LINE OUT to the Sansui's AUX jacks.

Offhand, possible fault would be cold solder issues and/or some of the solder joints may have cracked, loosen up. Fix would be a shotgun approach of re-soldering most if not all of the soldered joints particularly those of the RCA jacks' pins.

Unfortunately, I have only the Service Manual for the SS-315 to serve as guide.
