Customer Question

i am trying to connect a phono mixer to my yamaha ax496 amplifier.
the turntables are technics sl1200 and despite trying several different mixers
i am experiencing low volume and a overpowering static type hum through the
speakers.. the decks are grounded properly to the mixer , i mention this because it sounds
like an earthing problem..

Hi and welcome to JustAnswer,

Thank you for the question and your patience. Should you still need assistance for information purposes only...

Initially, does the Yamaha work correctly when another input is connected such as a CD player? Additionally, have you tried to temporarily connect directly either Technics SL-1200 to the PHONO jacks of the AX-396?

Customer replied 338 days and 22 hours ago.

yes the amp works perfectly on other in input cd, cd recorder etc..

and yes i have tried phono into the amp directly..thats ok.

the problem occurs when i connect phono through a mixer..

and as i said i have tried several different mixers.. all result in the same problem,

an audible hum which increases as you increase the volume

even without a record playing

I understand.

A review:

  • Technics SL-1200 to PHONO inputs of the mixer;
  • turntable grounds to the mixer;
  • mixer's output to any of the Yamaha's line level input jacks such as AUX (except PHONO);
  • mixer's ground to Yamaha's ground.
