I don't have voice commands on my Garmin 255W. The maps display, but no voice.Have checked the mute control and it is off. What can I do?

Sorry I didn't see your question earlier.
Can you tell me how long you have owned this unit and when this issue began?
Also, are you getting ANY sound from the unit at all, such as beep tones when you move from one screen to another?

Yes, I'm getting beeps when turning on and when I change screens.I received this last winter. I took it to Los Angeles when I flew there early Fall. That's when I first noticedno voice directions, though it would show the appropriate maps.

The fact that it is still giving directions on the map is a good thing. Let's see if we can find the lost voice.
What I would like you to do is the following.
When you get to step 5 (which I made bold), you should see a "voice file name" that ends with "TTS" (stands for Text-To-Speech). Please let me know what name you see there. It should be something like "American English - Jill (TTS)". If you do see something like that - CHANGE IT to another voice that you will understand (like American English Jack (TTS)). This is just to see if the voice file has to be "reloaded".
Once that is done, go back and enter a nearby destination, and allow the unit to calculate the route. You should there here something like "Please drive to highlighted route". If that works, go back to the same screen and select the voice of your choice (that ends with TTS), and try again.
Please let me know what you see and hear as you go through this process. There may be more steps that are needed to get this working again.

I followed your suggestions and tried a few different voices for American English - Jack, Samantha, etc. Even tried the British English. Took it out for a trial run and still no voice.I think the voice file will have to be reloaded unless you have another idea.Thanks so much.
You voice files may have been corrupted.
You should be able to reload them at the END of the update procedure shown below.
