I was given a Garmin Approach G5 golf range finder for my birthday--I lost the insruction manual and cannot use it or charge it--I plugged it into my computer , but nothing happens .The GARMIN name comes on the panel , but thats it--Pushing the on button does nothing .Does it have batteries that need replacing and if so , how ?How do you charge the unit ?Help !!
Optional Information: Make: Garmin Model: Approach G5 Already Tried: 1 ) Tried to charge using the computer plug in to USB port . 2 ) tried to turn on , but when it did work ( 2 months ago ) it said batteries low and the screen would be faded out , or something to that effect
Hello & Welcome,
You can get the manual by clicking the link below. This is a PDF file, so you will need to have Acrobat Reader installed on your computer to view the file. Don't worry - most computers already have that. If not, just click the link here -> Acrobat Reader
Once you have that manual, you will have what you need to operate the unit.
As for the batteries, whoever gave you the unit probably put some batteries in for you. It is recommended that you use rechargable Lithium or NiMH batteries, as they last longer and can be use multiple times. You will find all that information in the manual.
Please let me know if you have more questions.

Hi Greg
1 ) I received the manual and printed it out .
I had a hard time removing the back plate to get to the batteries ., but finally did
I'm not sure if low or dead batteries are the problem-
I'm having a difficult time replacing the back cover after I replaced the batteries-
It says " push the LATCH DOWN " I can't get the latch to do anything !!! and I cannot close the back into the proper position--HELP !
2 ) If I ever do get the back closed--how do I recharge the batteries ? will it charge if I plug the cable into the computer ?
Greg
I found the latch ( it was beneath the cover )and now the back is closed --
The unit will not turn on--It might be the wrong batteries--I'll go to Radio Shack and get some lithium batteries-
I will contact you again after I install them
Greg A
I installed two new Lith batteries--they are installed correctly .
The units face lights up with GARMIN--but thats all--I push and hold the on button-but nothing happens --I tried touching the screen , I pluged it into the computer--but I can't get a picture or anything else on the screen , other the the name-" Garmine " ???
Please advise
Thank you

Hi again,
Sorry for the delay - I just got back.
I hope you also got a battery charger that matches the batteries, as both the lithium & NiMH batteries are rechargable. Even though they may have some power when you get them, they should be fully charged before use. I did NOT find that the batteries can be charged from the unit. If it did have that capability, I would assume there would be some instruction on how to do that, and there would be a switch of some kind for using the different battery types, so make sure you have a charger too.
You can also get some Alkaline batteries and try those. They will not be rechargable, but they are cheap and readily available.
Another thing: Can you tell me how old this unit is? Was this a "new" unit when you received it? Has it ever worked?
Thanks

I just put in the Lith batteries--it didn't say anything about charging them first--at any rate ,it does the same thing with either the Lith or regular alkaline batteries--the screen says Garmin in the middle and the bottom says in small print " loading waypoints , tracks and routes "
It remains the same if I push and hold the on button or it just sits there on my desk .
It was new when my daughter gave iyt to me for my BD in Feb-2010.
I t did work for me in March and april --but I haven't used it since as
1 ) My home course has reflectors on the flagpoles and I use a laser link range finder that measures to the pin.
2 ) I have not been able to use it on other courses because the screen was so dim--but I didn't know how to change batteries as I lost my owners manual and that most likely was the reason why the screen was dim .I also thought that by plugging the garmin into the computer would charge the batteries .
I cannot turn the Garmin off --so I'm sure the batteries will drain
I'm at a lost and I sure wanted to use it this weekend as I will be playing in a golf tournament at 2 different golf courses on Sat and Sun .
I will answer your reply sometime next Mon or Tues when I return home
Hope you can help out
Ray
If the unit was new and worked at that time, but now it does not, then you might want to seriously considering contacting Garmin support so that you can have it repaired under warranty.
This of course assumes that you did not see any visible damage from the run down batteries that you had in there before. If you see any corrosion around the battery terminals, that could explain why it is not behaving properly.
In any case, here is the site where you can start the repair process.
Garmin Repairs (warranty).
Please let me know what happens or if you have more questions.
