That means your digital signal processor has failed. Not much you can do other than replacement or take it in for service. Wish I had better news.

Why doe's am work but nothing else

I'm assuming that it's because AM is more of an analog signal. FM is a frequency modulated signal that needs more than just rectification. An FM signal uses digital decoding, discriminators, etc. Unless you like talk radio a whole lot, you're going to need it serviced.

I can't even ply cd's or tapes

CD's need digital signal processing. Not sure why tapes won't play. Without it in front of me to troubleshoot, I can't find the exact problem. Sorry.
