Hi and welcome to JustAnswer,

The Sony PS3 has 3 methods of connection to a TV:
  • A / V Cable;
  • HDMI Cable;
  • Optical Cable.

Whereas to my knowledge, the Philips 26HFL5830D/27 has:
  • A / V Composite;
  • S - Video
  • Composite Video (Y, PB, PR)
  • HDMI.
Which leaves the choices between:
  • A / V Composite; or
  • HDMI
However, the 26HFL5830D/27 uses a non-standard A / V connector that is meant more for video cameras (camcorders) which then leaves the HDMI as the choice.

We went to best buy and bought a HDMI cable.. we can get sound and a black and white picture I am not sure what to do or what plugs into what.

Normally should be 'plug n play'
Still possibilities are:
  1. It might be signal loss on the HDMI cable. Did you get those that looks like gold plated?
  2. Settings / configurations. Ensure the PS3 is configured to "broadcast" through HDMI:
  • power off the PS3;
  • verify connections of HDMI to Philips 26HFL5830D/27 fromPS3;
  • press and hold power button on the PS3 until 2 beeps are heard;
  • verify HDMI receptionon the Philips 26HFL5830D/27;
  • configure HDMI preferences. (Normally, all Yes's on screen)
or try Set RGB Full Range (HDMI) on the PS3 to "Limited" and set Super-white to "ON".
