What would be the likely cause for a Yamaha Electone E3 organ

Customer Question

What would be the likely cause for a Yamaha Electone E3 organ to not play the pedal notes when all else works fine? I only get a thumping sound from pressing any pedal plus the lower octave softly plays the note, though it seems at a higher pitch. Any thoughts would help.

Optional Information:
Make: Yamaha
Model: Electone E3

Already Tried:
Tried all controls with no effect on loss of pedal sounds. Main speaker works as percussion all works as it should.

Hi rseverin,

First, try resetting the system:

  • Turn off the electone.
  • Wait 20 seconds.
  • Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  • ----- Wait 20 minutes.-----
  • Re-apply power.
-----

  • If still non-responsive, the electrical connector for the foot pedals may be loose or the pedal bushings are worn out.
  • Unfortunately access to the internals of the foot pedals can be difficult.
  • Click the link below for an example.

Thanks for your reply. I followed your suggestion of turning off, disconnecting the power for 20 minutes and then plugging in and turning the unit back on. This didn't solve my problem.

The reference you sent to an article on Yamaha pedals doesn't apply to my Yahama E3 at all. My unit has a detachable 25 key pedal board. However, it is completely mechanical with no electrical components. The pedals are hinged at the back. When you push a pedal down the front of the pedal pushes down on a lever built into the bottom front of the main console. I assume this closes a contact which I can't see without removing an internal cover.

Again, each pedal must be making some contact as I get the thumping noise whenever any pedal is pressed and I also get a very soft musical tone from at least the lowest octave of pedals. In fact, the series of tones form an octave of musical tones. With no pedal tone lever set I do not get the thumping sound or any tone. I can hear the sound with any of the tone levers on except for the 16'. The 16' may be too low in volume for me to hear it. Note in all cases the volume is far below what it should be for normal pedal tones.

Hope this additional information will be of help. I haven't given up by any means and am still looking for help.

Hi rseverin,

You need to open the unit to look at the electrical contacts.

  • It sounds like the power supply for that section has failed.
  • Without the schematic diagram, I can only tell you to look at replacing the electrolytic capacitors that filter the power to the subsystem.
  • These capacitors use an electrolyte that can gas and cause the cylindrical aluminum case to bulge and give you an visual indication that the part has failed.
