Customer Question

I have been a licensed handyman for over 20 years. I know wiring, but this one has me stumped. I put in a new chandelier. I connected the ribbed wire to the neutral, and smooth to hot. It tripped the breaker. When I connect the ribbed to black, the light works but the dimmer does not work. What could I be doing wrong?

Hello and welcome to Just Answer. My name is ***** ***** I will be happy to assist you with your electrical question.

1) How many individual wires and the wire colors in the ceiling box?

2) How many wires and the wire colors that are terminated to the switch?

Customer: replied 8 months ago.
In the ceiling box there's hot and neutral. There's one switch. In the box there's a group with all the neutral. Line goes into dimmer line other side is hot going to light.
