I'm replacing a switch to pressure tank on my well pump in the basement and when I hooked four wires to the switch and switched on the breaker I heard a loud pop.

Then you probably crossed the wires when you hooked it up. It's pretty easy to do. You should have 1 hot leg wire and 1 pump wire on each side of the contact. If you put 2 hot wires on the same side you get a short as soon as the power is turned on if the switch is closed.

I already did. You connect 1 hot wire and 1 pump wire to each contact. If you lost track of which is which you'll need a voltmeter to determine which leads are hot
