Hi, I'm Mike G and I'll be assisting you. Your problem suggests that the connections in the fan canopy have both the fan motor and light on the same switched wire. The remote is a secondary control. To split the functions, you'll need to open the canopy and tell me how it is wired. If the feed for the outlet is at the ceiling a reconfiguration of the connections can be made to split the functions.
