Customer Question

I am trying to install a sensor switch. A Lutron Maestro - it has two black, one green and a bare wire. The outlet has a black, a white and a ground. I tried connecting black to black and black to white and green to ground (and their bare wire). It lights up, but I cannot get the sensor part to work

Hi, I'm Mike G and I'll be assisting you. Let me ask, are you leaving the room to observe whether it functions? If you aren't it will stay on.

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
It is a small utility room and I am not in it and the door is closed.
Expert:  Mike G. replied 1 year ago.

Try swaping the connections and then check for operation.

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
you mean changing the black to black and black to white?
Expert:  Mike G. replied 1 year ago.

Yes, the hot needs to be on a specific wire to operate properly. Let me know how it goes.

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
ok this will take a few minutes.
Expert:  Mike G. replied 1 year ago.

No problem.

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
okay, I made that change. The ONLY thing I changed was the two black wires which are connected to the black and white in my box. The light again works. It does not go out, however.
Expert:  Mike G. replied 1 year ago.

Well you must have a bad device. Return it.

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
seriously?
Expert:  Mike G. replied 1 year ago.

If it doesn't work what else.

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
do both of the black wires of the device need to be connected to a wire from the box? Does the White wire in the box need to be connected to anything?right now, a black from device is connected to black from box
black from device is connected to white from box
green from device is connected to the device bare wire and the ground wire from the box
Expert:  Mike G. replied 1 year ago.

You have it wired correctly. For the light to remain on, the contacts are welded in the device.

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
I guess the next thing is to call the manufacturer and see what they say about the settings since the wiring is correct.
Expert:  Mike G. replied 1 year ago.

There is only sensitivity and time settings.
