I am installing a new LG cook-top with black, red and green

This answer was rated:

I am installing a new LG cook-top with black, red and green wires and the wall metal junction box has black, white and a bare wire on a double 40 amp circuit. What are the proper connections? I'm thinking blk-blk, grn-bare, and red-wht?? Would greatly appreciate your sage advice.
Thanks.

Hi Bob. Welcome to Just

Jason :

Answer

Jason :

You are correct.

Jason :

Black to black, white to red, and bare to green.

Customer:

I thought red was a hot wire, not so in this situation? Why did LG use a red wire instead of white?

Jason :

What's probably throwing you off is that the white from the wall is a hot, not a neutral. That's a little unusual, but not overly. It's not terribly uncommon to see 240 volt circuits that are run with only black, white, and ground have the white as a hot. That means that circuit doesn't need a neutral.

Jason :

The red from the cooktop is a hot, as is the white from the wall.

Customer:

OK, so I can turn on the power and all will be well?

Jason :

Yes, it should be all set.

Customer:

Still, funny they don't provide any information on this situation and only the instructions show matched colors.

Jason :

I understand. I actually haven't connected one for a few years now, as I work in maintenance at a hospital now. But I know for sure the connections I advised are correct.

Customer:

Thanks very much for your kind assistance.

Jason :

You are most welcome. Is there anything else I can do for you?

Customer:

That was my only item to check on. Thanks.

Jason :

My pleasure. Take care.
