replacing broken switch, there are two switches in one box, controlling the light and the fan. I bought a dual switch, connected it the same way, and now the light stays on, and only the fan can be controlled. Do I need a three way switch?

Sparky :

You have one side on you dual switch that has a metal piece that connects the top to the bottom screw. This is where your power, or hot wire will go. The switch leg wires will go to the other 2 screws on the opposite side.

Sparky :

If you need help identifying which is which, let me know.
