Customer Question

Hi,
I'm trying to replace ceiling light fixture with a new one, actually 3. I installed the first one with no problem, but the last two are giving me problems.
I connect the white to white and the black to black and ground to ground. When I turn the power on the lights come on and stay on without me turning on the switch.

AssuredElectrical :

Welcome. My name is XXXXX XXX would be glad to assist.

AssuredElectrical :

Are all 3 of the fixtures operated by the same Switch?

Customer : No
AssuredElectrical :

ok

AssuredElectrical :

so the one that is giving the trouble, is it by itself on a switch?

Customer : Yes and there are two fixtures, each with there own switch.
Customer : The two boxes are wired differently
AssuredElectrical :

thanks

AssuredElectrical :

we need to work on 1 at a time

Customer : K
AssuredElectrical :

the one you are installing right now, how many wires in the ceiling box? and what colors?

Customer : Two black, two white, two bare, one red
AssuredElectrical :

and how did you connect the light to the wires?

Customer : Two white wires from fixture to box, same with black wires and ground from fixture wrapped around green nut and connect to two bare wires from box
AssuredElectrical :

ok, thanks

AssuredElectrical :

do this: remove the fixture black wires from the ceiling black wires, then connect the fixture black wires to the red wire. Leave the 2 ceiling blacks connected together and cap them with a wire nut

AssuredElectrical :

Leave everything else connected as it is

Customer : Excellent, it works, should I do the same for the other, the only difference is it has three of each white, black, bare wires coming from box and one red.
AssuredElectrical :

yes, leave the blacks connected together to each other in the ceiling and capped. Do not use those. Connect the fixture blacks to the red wire

AssuredElectrical :

still connect the fixture whites to all 3 ceiling whites

Customer : I need five minutes to make sure the connection works. Putting together now. Stay with me to make sure it works. Thanks
AssuredElectrical :

I will wait, no problem

Customer : All is good, thank you!
AssuredElectrical :

You are very welcome. Glad to be of service.
