I am wiring my home office - I have a set of wires coming up

Customer Question

I am wiring my home office - I have a set of wires coming up from the panel (that goes to other rooms)

I would like to run 6 electric Plugs (independent of the ones in the room and I want them to be surge protectors - I can get my 6 outlets without the surge protector and them get a surge protector in each outlet (the way I do it now)

Just bought an eaton surge trap CHSPT2Micro

The only wires to (or in) the eaton box are 4 wires White, Green, Red and Black

How do I insert this little box between the wires (house) and my six new plugs?

Thank you

Justo

Optional Information:
Make: Eaton

You are corresponding with JOSEPH (The Electrical Doctor) - Your "Personal On-Line Electrical Professional Consultant".

You purchase a whole house surge protector. So your best bet is to place this at the main electrical Panel and wire it in there. This will protect your circuits in that panel.

Too complicated for me

I already have my wires ready to 'wire' my six outlets in the room

Is there a way that I can put the box just for the room? - how do I wire it? - it looks like it has only 'inputs' OR 'outputs' - Only 4 wires - how I do it?

I have 3 wires white, black and green - the box has 4 white, green red and black - I need 3 wires going to my outlets

the best guess I have is that I can tie the whites and greens with whites and greens continuing and the tie the black to the black and continue with the green, white and red to my outlets

Please help

Heres the problem, this is intended to protect 240v/120v systems. So wiring this only into 120v will not work. You can still get the same protection by wiring this into the main panel and installing this on a double pole 20amp breaker.

By wiring this into the panel the black and red wires connect to the breaker, and the white and green wires connect to the neutral/ground bar.

Soooooo

'I bit more that I can chew'

I do not want to mess with the full panel - I do not enough and can get into serious problem

My idea then, does not work - so, I will continue with my initial idea of wiring my 6 outlets and return the micro

OR

see if I can find an electrician to put it in the panel - my understanding from your responses is that if I put it between the panel and the house, all the house is protected

BUT, I can not just put in between by 3 wires (house) and my outlets

am I correct?

Thank you

You do have another option and that is this: You can buy a TVSS Outlet which acts like a gfci. You incoming line from the panel comes to the line side of the surge outlet and wiring the rest of the outlets from the load side protects the outlets through the suge outlet.

Does this make sense?

Maybe it is too much for my level of expertise

I do not know what a TVSS is but I can understand this

1. connect my three wires to a 'off the shelf' surge protector - if worse comes to worst, just make a three prong end to the 3 wires and 'plug' them into the multi outlet surge protector

Then on the continuation cables do the same ('end them' on a plug) and plug it into one of the outlets - ten my 6 new outlets will be protected

Am I right?

Thank you

If you can install an outlet and run wiring like you have, you can definately do this. Now here is an example of the surge supression outlet at Lowes.

On the back of this outlet, you will see an input side and an output side. The input side comes from the panel and the rest of the wires connect to the load side. This will protect all the outlets on that string.

Does this help?

I think I do

I will go Lowes with the picture

Just to be sure - I have to end my three wires from the panel with a plug and the the beginning of my three continuing wires on a plug - then plus the panel wires plug into the 'input and the the beginning of my continuing wires to the out side, right?

Maybe I can find individual outlets that are surge protected - never thought about it

Thanks

Justo
