Customer Question

If an electical service panel was installed in a half bath in the early 1980s, was there a code in effect at that time that prohibited this? I have been told the code went into effect in 1993(in New York state), but panels installed prior to that are not required to be moved if they are otherwise in good and functional condition. I'm not asking if it is 'recommended', I am asking if it is 'required' to relocate the box. Thank you.

Already Tried:
A local electrician has already looked at it and determined that it is not necessary to relocate the service panel. I am just looking for confirmation.

mrromex :

hi this is john and will be happy to help

mrromex :

if the current panel was installed and inspected at that time, it is perfectly fine......if you were to do a service change or any type of remodeling that would cause you to move the panel, then the panel's location must meet with the most current codes that your locale, county or state is enforcing

mrromex :

if it was required to bring every home up to date with all current codes, there would be a whole lot of more electricians back to work for a very long time!!!!

mrromex :

there is nothing in the current code book that says before this date blah, blah, blah and after this date blah, blah blah

mrromex :

hope this info was helpful

Customer :

It has been helpful and confirms what I was told. Are you a licensed electrician? I plan to hit the 'Accept' button, but I would like to know if I will be able to print the answer.

mrromex :

yes sir

Customer :

Thanks for your help!

mrromex :

no problem
