Customer Question

Hi

I was cleaning the tiles in my kitchen when some of the cleaning solution went into the power point. It made a crackling noise and lit up. The power point was not on at the time. Should I get an electrician to look at it? Would it be ok to try plugging something in to see if it still works?

Hotwire2012 :

Hello my name is XXXXXX, X'XX be glad to assist you.

Hotwire2012 :

by power point are you refering to an electrical Outlet/receptacle, or Switch, also when you say it lit up can you clarify? Also if this device/receptacle did not have power on it at the time it should not have had a arc,

Hotwire2012 :

I believe what may have happened was as you were cleaning the outlet, you may have moved it slightly, causing a loose wire that connects to receptacle to arc, you should not use the receptacle until this is checked/repaired, if you are comfortable checking this your self it can save you some money, and its fairly easy to do, if you are not comfortable by all means call an electrician, if you do want to check, first turn off power, remove outlet cover, then remove screws holding outlet to the box, pull outlet out of the box, take note of any loose wires as you pull outlet from box they may come off, check wiring for damage/burns, if this is a gfci outlet(the one with push buttons on front) the wires will likely be stuck in holes in back of outlet, be sure screws on side of outlet are tight, if this is a normal outlet wrap wires around screws on the side and tighten down, when this is done, push outlet back in box, put in screws that hold outlet to box back in, and put on cover, restore power.

this photo is showing how to wrap wires around screws, if you have a regular duplex outlet, white wires to silver screws, black wires to brass screws, bare to green screw

This photo refers to the gfci outlet, you will notice how the wires are pushed into back of outlet and do not wrap around screws, be sure that screws are *** tight ****

I did not touch the switch. I sprayed some cleaning solution on the tiles above and some ran down into the switch which caused the crackling and flash of light coming from within the switch.

So it is a Light Switch, I think it would have to be quite a bit of cleaning solution, to cause a problem with the switch, it is possible you have a loose connection at the switch, you should be fine in turning the switch on as long as it is dry now, and your breaker should trip if you have a short or anything dangerous there, I would recommend changing the switch though just to be on the safe side,

most likely what happened in the switch is when the cleaning product ran down into it, it created a momentary short in the switch, which caused the light/arc you saw,
