i have a whirlpool gas water heater and the pilot light wont stay lit. i can light it, but when i release the reset button, the pilot goes out

This means the 'thermocouple is either not in the pilot flame to heat or it's failed or loose. Check the connection of the thermocouple where it connects to the side of the gas valve. It's the little copper line that looks like wire but it's actually not wire. Make sure the nut is tight. Look in at the pilot flame and make sure it's a hearty blue color and the thermocouple is directly in the top of the flame
