Resolved Question:

What do I connect the red wire to if my new light fixture does not have a red wire? I can't remember how the old fixture was connected.

It sounds like this is pre-wiring for a ceiling fan. So what you do in this case is just use the black, white and ground wires. Cap off the red – you will not need it.

Now to connect it – black to black, White to white and the bare ground to the green wire. Once you do this you will be good to go.

Hope this helps you out. If you should need anything further please don't hesitate to ask. Good Luck!!

Reply to Joseph's Post: I did not take a ceiling fan down and I'm not putting one up. I think the red wire is connected to my switch and when I connect it to the white wire the light comes on even though the switch is off and when i turn the switch on it trips the breaker. When i connect it to the black wire, the light is on but not connected to the switch.

In that case you will terminate the red wire to black of the light fixture. Then white to white and ground to the green wires. Then just cap off the black wire.

Hope this helps you out. If you should need anything further please don't hesitate to ask. Good Luck!!
