i have a 2008 42 volt western golf cart that runs great in forward, but usually doesnt go into reverse. it trys, but acts like something is disconnecting

Does it have the large forward/reverse switch behind the knee area? Typical directional problems is the f/r switch assembly.

swap the f/r leads to see if problem changes places.

It is a shunt motor, it has the f/r seitch on the dash

So f/r change is made in the controller. The field is changed at drive motor to change it's direction. Brakes are not holding in reverse?

?? Wheels not rotating? Raise cart and see if one side or both are locked. Then remove the locked wheel and hub to check brakes.

Did you raise the rear and check each wheel? What is the battery voltage read at pack? You say 42 volts cart? Not 48???
