Customer Question

I have a 94 DS with the large engine. When the engine is warmed up it will not restart. After it cools down it will restart. I have literally changed everything but the engine. Any suggestions.

So you have engine make and model? Have you reset the valves? Valves too tight will cause hard start when hot, due to the valves not seating. You have spark when unit quits?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
l do have spark. I have removed flywheel and cleaned all contact points.
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
the valves are set proper.

What is compression?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Have. Not checked compression but runs well with plenty of power and no smoke. I have read somewhere that bad crank seals can cause this problem. Whats your thoughts on this.
Expert:  Curtis B. replied 1 year ago.

Crank seals only affect two cycle engines. Your engine should be a four cycle! It has valves, where a two stroke does not.

OK l agree. But the fuel pump runs off crankcase vacuum?. Would this affect fuel pump fuel delivery. After engine. warms up
Expert:  Curtis B. replied 1 year ago.

Fuel pump is a pulse pump and works off the piston movement. It should not be affected by temperature, but it could be bad!

Expert:  Curtis B. replied 1 year ago.

It has to loose spark or fuel, or the valves lose all clearance and start to leak. Causing hard start when hot. ??

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Fuel pump has been replaced. As I said everything but engine. What is valve lash and compression. I don't have a manual
Expert:  Curtis B. replied 1 year ago.

Set valves at .006 inch. and compression needs to be around 100 psi.

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
OK I know valves are heavy more like 15 l will check compression
Expert:  Curtis B. replied 1 year ago.

OK, let me know.

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
OK l have checked compression. 100 or better on 3 trys. Cranking without plug gives plenty of fuel. Have to charge battery. On it.

Did you check the valves?
