I buy for my Nook all the time. Now it's asking me for my credit card and it's not taking what I have retyped.
JA: What's the make/model of your device? How old is it?
Customer: version 1.3.1 model BNRV500 I think it's 3 years old
JA: How long has this been going on? What troubleshooting have you tried?
Customer: I purchased a book last week. I've never had problems before. Do I have to have a current membership with Barnes & Noble?

This is usually an issue with the Firmware, so I would first like you to do this please.

Remove the charger from the Nook and hold the power button to off for 60 seconds.

Release, then connect the charger and try to turn on the Nook and purchase a book.
