This symptom can indicate several possible issues: an internal hardware failure, a low/faulty battery, or just a simple memory/firmware glitch.
The first step here will be to attempt to reboot the kindle. This is done by pressing/sliding and holding the power button for 20+ seconds, or until the screen flashes (usually with an image of a tree), then release. Give the kindle about a minute to start back up, and let me know if the problem persists, we can then try some further steps.
Did you buy the book on the kindle from the kindle store, or on your computer on amazon.com?
Is the kindle connected to your home wifi network currently?
Sorry I wasn't sure if you meant that you were traveling or if you were referring to a book title you were purchasing.
The kindle must be on wifi, regardless of your location, for a book to download.
Your home network only functions when you are at home.
So you will have to connect to a network where you are at (at a hotel, starbucks, etc) for the book to load.
Many hotel wifis or ones that need a sign in page on a web browser won't work.
If you have a computer with you you can download to the computer then transfer to the kindle via usb. Let me know if you'd like help with that process, Robin.
