My older color nook charges ok, opens ok but does not respond to any swipes etc.
I have cleaned screen and edges

Try resetting the firmware. To do this, press and hold the power button for 20 seconds. Let me know if it still does not respond.

I pressed and held power button for over 20 seconds. Read forever displayed then disappeared. I retried power button and released
when read forever etc.came up but still unable to swipe.

Try resetting the battery. To do this, plug it into the charger for 30 minutes. After that AND WHILE STILL PLUGGED IN, press and hold the power button for 30 seconds.

Charged for 30 minutes +. While plugged into charger pressed power button for 30 + seconds.
Display on but could not swipe. Unplugged charger saw message saying battery 100%.
Started nook again with power button but again could not swipe.

Sadly it seems it has failed. If you cleaned the edges and still no response, your only option is to purchase a new Nook. Once you register it to your account you'll have full access to all of your books.
