Hold the power button on it for 60 seconds. It should restart, after doing this test and see if it will respond. Try it a few times and let me know if anything changes. I will check the battery life on the newer models for you.
Darn unfortunately it sounds like it would need a part which it is usually cheaper to replace the Kindle itself. I was able to look up battery life for you and I would suggest this model:
Reading 30 minutes a day every day it is supposed to last 8 weeks. I believe this is also with the back light on low and with WiFi off though. So keep that in mind.
