Ok, maybe I was unclear. We are trying to find the firmware version. To do that, go into Device Info as previously described and tell me what version is on the screen.

Kindle 5.4.5.1(2440520001)

I understand. Ok, let's just assume that it needs updating.

What you will need to do is download a file to your computer and then copy it over to the Kindle.

To do this, I need to know which version of the Paperwhite you have there. Look on the back for a model number. It will be in very small characters and star with a 'D'.

Let me know.

Ok, then that's a second gen. Hold on please for instructions.

Expert:  Steve G. replied 1 year ago.

Ok, ON YOUR COMPUTER, not the Kindle, click HERE and download the update file. Save it to your computer.

Then:

  1. Transfer the software update file to your Kindle device:
    1. Turn on your Kindle and connect it to your computer using the USB cable.
    2. Drag and drop the new update file from your computer onto the Kindle drive.

Note: Do not drop the file into one of the folders within the Kindle drive.

  2. Monitor file transfer and disconnect:
    1. After the file has transferred successfully, eject the Kindle to safely disconnect your Kindle from your computer.
    2. Disconnect the USB cable from your Kindle and your computer.
  3. Start the software update:
    1. From Home, tap the Menu icon, and then tap Settings.
    2. Tap the Menu icon, and then tap Update Your Kindle. This option will be grayed out if the most recent update has already been installed or if the file transfer was not successful.
    3. Tap OK to perform the update. You will see Your Kindle Is Updating.
Once the update is complete, your Kindle will automatically restart.
Expert:  Steve G. replied 1 year ago.

Before you do this, go to UPDATE YOUR KINDLE on the Kindle itself and see if it will update over WiFi.

update your kindle is grayed out
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
I am out of time and we haven't made any progress
Expert:  Steve G. replied 1 year ago.

If update your Kindle is greyed out, you have the latest update for that particular Kindle. Usually, teh Kindle updates itself behind the scenes. You have the latest update.

PLease let me know if you need further help.

Regards

Steve
