That did not work....it says battery too low.....I'm thinking the port is defective ??

Take your time. That's the last troubleshooting step for this kind of problem. If the "USB force reset" solution doesn't resolve problem your Kindle is defective.
Good news is that your Kindle is still under Amazon warranty. If the the last solution I have provided you doesn't help you will have to contact Amazon warranty support service at 1-866-321-8851 in order to receive a new Kindle for free. The returning shipment would be free as well.
