Customer Question

I have a wonderful pit mix male dog, who is neutered. He is such a happy boy when he is alone, but when he comes around other larger dogs....male or female, he becomes very stressed....and even attacks.
We have not seen this issue with smaller dog or with any people. We have tried a multitude of items to try to acclimate him with other dogs. Need to find a place we can send him for training. we don't seem to be doing it right. Cant find any online.

I would hesitate to have you send him anywhere because when you send them out for training you don't know how the dog is being treated and many times this can backfire

What you might want to do is check out your local aspca and see if they offer reactive rover classes, you will be with your dog learning how to deal with it.

There are also trainers that can come to you to help you with the problem and do it in a positive manner so that the dog will eventually see other dogs approaching as a positive thing.

clicker trainers use a positive method to have the dog associate something bad as something good

You can also do this yourself if you do clicker training and teach the dog a firm heel and leave it command. then set him up to succeed being around other dogs by keeping him in an area where he may see dogs that bother him, praising his good behavior before he has the chance to act out , then reward and remove him by turning him away from the dog. This is behavior modification training. I will direct you to a site for both clicker training and BAT training as well as to sites for trainers in your area. It is important that the dog learn to listen to you and not a trainer, once the trainer is gone then you loose your power of vocal command. This is another reason why sending a dog away does not always work Clicker training/positive method training/ print offhttp://www.clickerlessons.com/ video’s to see how clicker training is done, scroll down to videos http://www.clickertrainusa.com/clicker-training-videos.htm Training method BAT http://empoweredanimals.com/
