In most cases such a peracute (sudden) facial swelling represents angioedema - an urticarial reaction secondary to hypersensitivity to a food, drug, chemical, plant, vaccination, or envenomation. Treatment with a glucocorticoid (steroid) such as prednisone should be most effective but if you don't have such as drug at home, an over the counter antihistamine such as diphenhydramine (Benadryl) dosed at 1-2 mg per pound of body weight (maximum dose of 50 mg at any one time) and repeated at 8-12 hour intervals if necessary can be helpful. Most dogs normalize within 72 hours unaided. Please respond with further questions or concerns if you wish.

CAN U TELL ME IF IS A PARTICULAR BENADRIL PILLS. WICH ONE S SHOULD I GET? THANKS...
Expert:  Dr. Michael Salkin replied 1 month ago.

Look for the least expensive generic diphenhydramine in your local drug store. Benadryl is a more costly brand name for diphenhydramine.
