9 MO old female Maltese/mix has begun having what I would

Customer Question

9 MO old female Maltese/mix has begun having what I would describe as sudden jerks or twitch in her hind quarter they occur for a quick second several times a day was just surfing to see if I could figure out what it is as my vet just up & left town w/o notice & closest vet is an hour away.
JA: I'll do all I can to help. What is wrong with the dog?
Customer: I posted above do you see my post?
JA: Where does the dog seem to hurt?
Customer: Her back end jerks suddenly for a sec several times a day she doesn't yelp or cry out
JA: OK. No obvious pain. Can you see anything that looks wrong or different?
Customer: Nothing
JA: Is the dog eating normally?
Customer: Yes
JA: OK. No appetite problems. Is the dog having trouble peeing or pooing?
Customer: No
JA: OK. No obvious problems there. How is the dog behaving differently?
Customer: No difference
JA: What is the dog's name and age?
Customer: Almost 9 months old. Her name is Chyna
JA: Is there anything else the Veterinarian should be aware of about Chyna?
Customer: She's up to date on all her shots. She hasn't been spayed yet my vet ran out on us. She's very active & did break her tail several months ago I also found out after she was gifted to me after the loss of my 11 yo Yorkie, she came from a puppy mill

You appear to be describing a tremor syndrome called sporadic myoclonus - sudden contraction of a muscle group such as a facial twitch or limb jerk. It may be benign or may represent focal seizure activity. Involuntary muscle contractions are distinguished from a seizure in the following way: involuntary muscle contractions aren't associated with autonomic dysfunction (urination, defecation, salivation); they are associated with normal mentation (mental status), and they can be consistent with a described clinical syndrome of muscle contractions - in this case sporadic myoclonus.

But she's only 8 months old. Does your Dx age discriminate? It is my understanding this affliction presents in late stages of life. Thx.

This particular type of tremor doesn't distinguish between ages; in fact, a constant repetitive myoclonus is very common with the neurologic form of canine distemper seen mostly in very young dogs. I believe that you're referring to senile tremors which generally don't interfere with normal function and so aren't treated.
