I have a ten year old (human years) miniature border collie

Customer Question

I have a ten year old (human years) miniature border collie who has started to act lethargic, won't eat or drink, had diarrhea for two days but nothing now for two days. No fever, no vomiting. Looks like she is gaining weight or bloated. Has mild wheeze on expiration. Will come when she is called and responds to commands appropriately but would rather just lie in her bed. Any suggestions??

Poor Lassie! Did the vet you saw do any lab work or xrays?

You are not responding but I will type you up some recommendations.

The diarrhea could be due to one of many things: 1. Stress 2. Dietary indiscretion 3. Infection (virus/ bacteria) 4. HGE (hemorrhagic gastroenteritis)

If this is just a mild infection or stress induced diarrhea/ colitis then it should resolve on it's own in 2-3 days without any specific treatment. One thing you can do is add a little canned pumpkin (1 teaspoon 2-3 times daily) to the diet. The extra fiber helps to firm up the stool and promote normal colon motility.

If the diarrhea looks like red water or jelly then I would worry about HGE which requires in hospital treatment. They also usually have vomiting and decreased appetite with HGE.

If signs do not resolve in 2-3 days or if signs progress then I'd get the dog seen and started on meds (Metronidazole most commonly).

I hope this helps, let me know if you have any other questions

For the not eating try cooking a bland diet of white rice and chicken. Offer small warm tablespoons at a time.

If Lassies stomach is upset you can also try 20mg of famotidine once a day to see if that helps makes her feel better.
