Ask a Dog Vet and Get Answers to Your Dog Veterinary Questions
Hello. Thank you for asking your question. My name is***** will try to help.
Did you call the regular vet to get an estimate of the cost? It should be around 40% less than the cost of the after hours clinic.
Was he sent home with any pain medication?
Which part of his leg is swollen?
Okay thank you.
NOrmally if it is fractured they will not bear much weight on it when walking. Of course I can not tell you if it fractured without an x-ray but bearing full weight on it is a good sign.
The only over the counter pain medication you can give dogs is aspirin. It has to be aspirin and nothing else.
5-10 mg of aspirin per each pound of dog every 12 hours.
For example a 10 pound dog can take 50-100 mg of aspirin every 12 hours.
Give it with food to help prevent gastrointestinal upset.
Hold an ice pack on the swelling for 20 minutes each hour until the swelling has resolved or until bedtime.
Most vets take carecredit which is financing for medical and dental and veterinary procedures.
It is easy to apply www.carecredit.com and you get an answer instantly.
You can contact your local Animal shelters, Humane Societies, SPCAs, and PETA if you want to try to find a lower cost x-ray.
So again I can not tell you if it is fractured but bearing full weigh on it is a good sign.
Does that help? Do you have any additional questions?
