Customer Question

Puppy just chewed the end off a Uni-ball Vision ink pen (not gel). The cylinder missing is about 3/4 inch. Do we need to get her to a vet? She acts normal.

Hello and thank you for asking your question. My name is***** will try to help.

No, you do not need to take her to a vet right now. Generally the ink in pens is not toxic. It could cause some mild gastrointestinal upset with vomiting, diarrhea, or lack of appetite. All of my own puppies have chewed on pens, as wells as my clients, and no adverse effects were noted.

The one thing you do need to monitor for is a gastrointestinal foreign body from the plastic tube.

Signs of a blockage do not usually occur until at least 24 hours after the offending object was eaten.

Signs would be severe lethargy, lack of appetite, pain when you palpate or press into the abdomen, blood in the stool, pale/white gum color, and vomiting.

So for now I would just keep an eye on Willa.

Does that help?
