Ask a Dog Vet and Get Answers to Your Dog Health Questions
Hi this is Dr. HIll. What type of dog and is he dry heaving or trying to throw up?
Usually constipation does not cause difficulty with walking. Has he been diagnosed with a heart murmur or any other medical condition?
When was the last bowel movement?
And he is not eating grass or acting nauseous?
Good. So, I would definitely give the miralax again. It is a safe product. Increased water consumption will help. Once he has a bowel movement, if his gait is not improved then he needs to be evaluated by your local veterinarian. Also, if he is getting constipated on his current diet, then his diet needs to be changed.
A hard stomach in a large breed dog can be a sign of bloat which is lethal if not taken care of immediately. That would be extremely unlikely in a chihuahua and he would also be trying to throw up.
Wobbly usually is a sign of weakness which was why I was concerned about his heart or an issue with the legs. Could he have gotten into anything, such as sugar free gum or chocolate?
So it sounds like Miralax would be a reasonable start and if he is not walking more normally after having a bowel movement, then he needs to be seen by a veterinarian locally. Please ask any follow up questions. You can post on this thread for a couple of days, even after rating my response. Take care
