My veterinarian has tells me about gat my small (4 kg) shitzu poodle cross dog has arthritis in his hips. The vet did say that it is possible to give the dog a dose of children's aspirin to ease the pain but I am not sure how much is safe

I'm sorry to hear of this with Misiu. Aspirin dosed at 20 mg/kg with food twice daily is safe. That would be equivalent to 80 mg twice daily - a baby/cardiac aspirin twice daily for Misiu. Acetaminophen is also safe but isn't antiinflammatory as is aspirin. It can be dosed at 15 mg/kg or 60 mg for Misiu thrice daily. You must avoid the toxic ibuprofen and naproxen.
