Customer Question

My dog is about 12 or 13 years old. Last week he stopped eating, drinks very little, sleeps all the time, breaths fast and hard, seems lost, or somewhat sight impaired, walks very unsteady. Can you help?
JA: I'm sorry to hear that. Could be a lot of things that cause lethargy. The veterinarian will know how to help your dog. What is the dog's name?
Customer: Scruffy
JA: Is there anything else the veterinarian should be aware of about Scruffy?
Customer: Not sure, like what?

I'm sorry to hear of this with Scruffy. You've described a critically ill dog in need of the attention of his vet at your earliest convenience. As you can imagine, any untoward symptoms at Scruffy's advanced age are important. Unlike in much younger dogs, degenerative disorders such as chronic renal and hepatic insufficienies and age-related malignancies are important considerations. His vet will want to perform a thorough physical exam including diagnostics in the form of blood and urine tests. You should know Scruffy's prognosis for functional recovery within 24 hours.
