Ask a Dog Vet and Get Answers to Your Dog Veterinary Questions
Hello, I'm Dr Gary. I've been practicing veterinary medicine since 2007. I look forward to helping with your questions/ concerns.
Sorry for the wait.
We don't use decongestants in dogs as they are easily toxic. What we do use, is anti-histamines. Benadryl is the most commonly used and best tolerated. The dose in dogs is 1-2 mg per lb body weight. It can be given every 6-8 hours, as needed.
Allergy testing with a dermatologist would be ideal to determine what he is allergic to and then immunotherapy treatment can be very helpful for chronic allergies.
I hope this helps, let me know if you have any other questions.
