We have a 8 or 9 year old puggle. We noticed something wrong

Customer Question

We have a 8 or 9 year old puggle. We noticed something wrong with his leg and took him to the vet. He got an X-ray and everything looked fine. After the vet both his legs were extremely weak. He finished his steroids and pain pills but isnt capable of jumping on the couch or bed anymore. He use to cuddle us dverynight now he doesn't. He can still jump up but usually needs help.

Heather, I'm sorry that your question wasn't answered in a timely manner. Are you referring to Obie's front or hind legs, please? It sounds as if Obie is suffering from either a myelopathy (spinal cord disorder) or encephalopathy (brain disorder) rather than a primary leg problem.

It his his back legs and getting a neuro test sounds expensive I saw this sight thought it was worth a shot. What would make those things happen? Do u suggest I see a neurologist

Thank you for the additional information. The most common myelopathy in a 9 year old puggle is degenerative disk disease (a "slipped disk"). This is genetically predetermined in most cases although an intervertebral disk can prolapse or rupture due to trauma as well. Most dogs who aren't severely affected will normalize within 3 weeks. Some remain symptomatic and some worsen to the point of needing surgical decompression of their spinal cord. The steroids and pain pills he was prescribed acted to decompress his spinal cord and provide him comfort, respectively. Because he's still symptomatic, I would now initiate a nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drug (NSAID) such as carprofen or meloxicam and see how that affects him. Hopefully with such a drug and the tincture of time, he'll continue to improve and mormalize. Please continue our conversation if you wish.
