Customer Question

I found a flea on my dog today so I bombed my house with. Flea bomb and I took my dog to my moms house for 8 hours, long enough for everything to dry.
I came back with my dog, started do things in the house then I turned around and my dog was chewing on something and then he wouldn't stop licking ( licking his tongue in and out). I called the vet but I don't have $300 to take, is there anything I can do until morning?

Hello & welcome, I am Dr. B, a licensed veterinarian and I would like to help you with today. I do apologize that your question was not answered before. Different experts come online at various times; I just came online, read about your wee one’s situation, and wanted to help.

Now if Baloo only starting licking excessively after ingesting a bit of the flea treatment, this just tells us that he didn't find the taste very nice but could also have some stomach upset from this. Therefore, all we'd do at this point is prevent him any more access and rinse his mouth with cool water.

As well, if he does show any gut upset from this, you can plan to offer a light diet. Examples of an easily digestible diet include cooked white rice with boiled chicken, boiled white fish, scrambled egg, or meat baby food (as long as its free from garlic or onion powder). Ideally, we want to offer this as small frequent meals to keep the stomach settled.

Further to this, if we see any hints of nausea, then we can also treat with an OTC antacid like Pepcid (More Info/Dose @ http://www.petplace.com/article/drug-library/library/over-the-counter/famotidine-pepcid) or Zantac (More Info/Dose @ http://www.petplace.com/article/drug-library/library/over-the-counter/ranitidine-hcl-zantac). These are usually given 20 minutes before offering food to allow absorption and of course you want to double check with your vet before use if your wee one has any know health issues or is on any medications you haven't mentioned.

Overall, this just sounds like he doesn't like the taste of the chemical, so we'd just want to carry out the above, monitor him generally, and provide supportive care if he does have any gut upset.

Please take care,

Dr. B.

Hi,

I'm just following up on our conversation about Baloo. How is everything going?
