JA: I'm sorry to hear that. Could be a lot of things that cause lethargy. The Veterinarian will know how to help the dog. What is the dog's name?
Customer: Laddy
JA: Is there anything else the Veterinarian should be aware of about Laddy?

He has been lathargic and down in the dumps for 3 days. Eats boiled chicken pieces but slowly eats it. He has had some diarrhea also. No vomiting.

I am sorry Laddy is lethargic and has diarrhea. In response to your question, diarrhea and lethargy can be caused by either disorder affecting the gastrointestinal tract or secondary to a systemic disease. The fact that Laddy is an older dog it is important to rule out a systemic disease. Common causes are kidney or liver disease, infections, ingestion of a foreign body, etc. to name a few causes. Unfortunately, we are very limited as to what you can do at home, I am sorry. To determine the exact underlying cause he will need a hands-on examination and some testing by a veterinarian. Treatment will be based on exam and test results. In the meantime, continue feeding him a bland diet of rice with boiled boneless chicken. In addition, Pepto Bismol 1 teaspoon every 8 hours for 1-2 days. Follow up with your family veterinarian; if cost is a concern look into your local ASPCA or Shelter where they often offer veterinary services at a lower cost.

My goal is to provide you with excellent service - I hope I've provided the information you were seeking, if you feel you have received anything less, please reply back as I am happy to address follow-up questions. Kindly rate me when you are done.
